2019 GOLD KEY AWARDS
BEST ECO OR SOCIALLY CONSCIOUS HOTEL
THE LODGE AT GULF STATE PARK – A HILTON HOTEL
GULF SHORES, ALABAMA
THE DESIGN FIRM: Looney & Associates, Dallas, Texas
THE MUSE: Return this retreat to the status it enjoyed as a social hub from its opening in 1974 to its destruction by Hurricane Ivan in 2004. Use FF&E decisions to educate guests about the Alabama’s art and culture and provide visual continuity with the surrounding state park.
THE MAGIC: Materials tell the story of Alabama and responsible sourcing. Colorful Adirondack lounge chairs are made of recycled plastic, while locally made porch swings convey a home-away-from-home. Natural, honest, enduring materials were used throughout, including indoor/outdoor textiles, woven textural pieces, reclaimed wood and elements with recycled content.
THE MESSAGE: Don’t be an insider. Outdoor gathering spaces, supplied with playful and durable outdoor furnishings, are provided throughout the property to allow guests to experience and share in the natural surroundings of the park.
