2019 GOLD KEY AWARDS
BEST GUESTROOM MIDSCALE

FINALIST
THE CYRUS HOTEL
TOPEKA, KANSAS

THE DESIGN FIRM: Avenir Creative, Chicago

THE MUSE: Cyrus K. Holliday—the man who built one of the nation’s first transcontinental railroads. Inspired by his accomplishments, the team decided to build off a modern take on Federalism with deep colors and rich tones that pervade the guestrooms. Textural surface materials and an open armoire lend a masculine tone to the living area, and the desk is a reference to Holliday’s avid letter writing.

THE MAGIC: Overcoming a schedule that included new construction (seven levels of guestrooms) and historic renovation (three levels of guestrooms) all at the same time.

THE MAVERICK MOVE: A game of design I Spy for train references— especially tricky to spot in the guestrooms. Check the lighting above the nightstand and the low headboard, both mimicking railroad rails and ties.
