Ibiza’s Sir Joan hotel awash in local touches

How can a new hotel stand out in Ibiza, a Spanish island that’s famed for being both an exclusive luxury destination and something of a party mecca? The answer for the personality-driven Sir Hotels flag was to have Tel Aviv-based design/architecture studio Baranowitz + Kronenberg create a 38-key property—dubbed Sir Joan—whose interiors pay homage to the yachting lifestyle, the surrounding ocean and the lively local arts scene.

“As with all Sir Hotels, it is essential that Sir Joan reflect the ethos of the surrounding area,” says Liran Wizman, the brand’s owner and founder. “We were inspired by the marina and the ocean, but also by the people on the island. By combining contemporary design with nostalgic details, we aim to create a unique urban oasis at the heart of the world-famous island.”

Keeping with that local feel, the property showcases a collection of curated art, including works from Spanish artists Joan Hernandez Pijuan, and Carlos Irijalba Inercia, alongside images by Ibiza-based photographer Landry A.

The ground floor public area evokes a “members only” social club. Vertical corrugated steel bars line the interior walls, taking cues from naval ropes and the look of eroded metal by the sea. That floor is also home to property’s two restaurants: IZAKAYA Asian Kitchen & Bar, a Japanese-Peruvian fusion concept that originated in Amsterdam, and THE BUTCHER, a high-end burger bar that’s accessible through a separate entrance. (Both restaurants were founded and are owned by The Entourage Group, which is helmed by Yossi Eliyahoo and Wizman.) Highlights of the property’s accommodations include penthouse suites with wraparound terraces, outdoor seating, private cabanas and open-air kitchens.

A Design Hotels member, Sir Hotels is a brand of Amsterdam-based hotel development/management company Europe Hotels Private Collection (EHPC). Sir Joan marks the flag’s fifth hotel overall and its third to open this year, following Sir Adam, which debuted in Amsterdam in February, and Sir Nikolai, which opened in Hamburg in June.
