2019 GOLD KEY AWARDS
BEST ECO OR SOCIALLY CONSCIOUS HOTEL
SIRRU FEN FUSHI, MALDIVES
THE DESIGN FIRM: Hirsch Bedner Associates (HBA), Singapore
THE MUSE: Discover a design approach that lives up to the resort’s name, which means “secret water island.” Marry the best of human ingenuity—as in a 656-ft. swimming pool that traverses the length of the island—with views of and access to one of the Maldives’ largest lagoons.
THE MAGIC: Natural wonders. Balinese artisans used no manmade materials to build the intricate open-air bamboo bar. The villas—with a natural palette of hand-troweled plaster walls, bleached teak and natural fabrics—are anchored by a giant copper bathtub. No extras needed.
THE MAVERICK MOVE: The semi-submerged Colarium is the first regeneration project in the form of an underwater installation. Its aim is to create an artificial reef in an otherwise dead lagoon. It invites guest participation in the coral propagation program and serves as a sanctuary for ocean life.
