2019 GOLD KEY AWARDS
BEST ECO OR SOCIALLY CONSCIOUS HOTEL
THE DESIGN FIRM: AvroKO, New York
THE MUSE: Create an inclusive gathering place for changemakers and creatives with a design that bridges Hong Kong’s past and future. Take cues from the visual vernacular of the surrounding Kowloon neighborhood, a neon-hued shopping, arts and entertainment district in Hong Kong, as well as the evocative nostalgia of stately and elegant 1950s Hong Kong.
THE MAGIC: An ambience that looks firmly toward the future. Eaton’s streamlined furnishings as well as the use of local materials and color palettes keep the vibe modern. In Eaton Hotel’s destination bar, Terrible Baby, the space’s soft modular seating, built for communal gathering, is juxtaposed against cubic geometries in wood, ultimately evoking Frank Lloyd Wright. Hand-formed ceramic tile finishes appear throughout the Astor, Eaton’s restaurant, reflecting the tile work seen in the Kowloon neighborhood, where clashing patterns and colors are freely mixed across buildings’ facades.
THE MAVERICK MOVE: To foster community events and creative pursuits, many of Eaton’s spaces are designed to serve a variety of roles. The Eaton House’s reception desk can work as a bar, food counter or a shared workspace when not in event mode. Likewise, the meeting and event space Anita can transform into a place for group exercise, dance, yoga or other wellness-oriented activities.
THE MESSAGE: “Eaton HK demonstrates that the hospitality industry can be a regenerative catalyst for positive impact, not only for travelers who are seeking inspiration and innovation but also for the local community, and the environment,” says William Harris, cofounder/principal of AvroKO along with Kristina O’Neal, Adam Farmerie and Greg Bradshaw.
