Viceroy Hotel Group has taken over management of Hotel Mar Adentro in Los Cabos, Mexico, and will relaunch it under the Viceroy brand this spring. Originally created by Mexican architect Miguel Angel Aragonés, the beachfront resort in San José del Cabo will be renovated before debuting as part of The Viceroy Icon Collection.

Spearheading the property’s updates is Al Arquitectura de Interiores of Guadalajara, Mexico. The scope of that work includes the addition of a beach bar and beach pool and an expanded, redesigned fitness center and spa. Two of the four existing dining outlets will also be structurally updated and re-conceptualized. Upon completion, Viceroy Los Cabos will feature 194 rooms, suites and villas, and 50 residences.

Viceroy Los Cabos is the brand’s first collaboration with Rodina Group, an investment firm specializing in hospitality, real estate, transportation and infrastructure across Mexico, which acquired the hotel in December.

“This is an incredible opportunity to expand our presence in Mexico and to offer travelers a remarkable Viceroy experience in Los Cabos,” says Bill Walshe, ceo, Viceroy Hotel Group. “It is a privilege to collaborate with such an accomplished partner as Rodina, which shares our vision to create an extraordinary new modern luxury resort experience in one of the world’s most sought after destinations.”

Felipe and Andres Chico, managing partners at Rodina, add: “We are thrilled to bring the first Viceroy to Los Cabos, as the brand is perfectly suited for such a striking and progressive property. With every angle thoughtfully designed, Viceroy Los Cabos will emerge as a modern icon and truly unique destination in Los Cabos.”

Viceroy Los Cabos will be the company’s second luxury resort in Mexico; the other is Viceroy Riviera Maya on Playa del Carmen. In addition to Cabos, other upcoming openings by Viceroy include properties in Serbia, Argentina, Panama, Portugal and Vietnam.
