THE BLAKE HOTEL
NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT
THE DESIGN FIRM: HVS Design, Rockville, Maryland
THE MUSE: Ivy league sophistication. Just steps away from Yale University, this extended-stay property gave New Haven its first new hotel in years, according to Christine Shanahan, principal, HVS Design. Crisp white walls surround a mix of wood finishes set off with metal accents; furnishings like rust-colored velvet sofas and a tall headboard wrapped in a textured, charcoal fabric with wide-channel stitching.
THE MAGIC: Maintaining that handsome aesthetic without stifling the warmth of a fully-equipped kitchenette. Open shelving alongside navy blue cabinet faces with brass hardware promotes ease of use, as does the mahogany and dark-walnut island.
THE MESSAGE: HVS wanted to harness a forward-looking spirit, as the hotel’s namesake is the first female graduate of Yale Law School—Alice Blake. Elements like the rich wood floors visually enlarge the space, offering up a new kind of stay for the neighborhood.
