French-owned cruise line PONANT’s first electric hybrid polar exploration vessel, Le Commandant Charcot, was recently laid at the Vard shipyard in Tulcea, Romania. This is the second key stage in the construction of the 135-cabin ship designed in collaboration with Stirling Design Intl. and icebreaker specialists Aker Arctic.
Designed as the first luxury icebreaker and named after French explorer Jean-Baptiste Charcot, the Liquefied Natural Gas-propelled vessel will integrate the latest innovations in environmental protection. Le Commandant Charcot will be the first exploration vessel to exceed the ecological standards set out in international regulations.
The ship is designed for polar explorations and will have a PC2 Polar Class certification, allowing it to reach destinations such as the Geographic North Pole and remote sites of Antarctica including the Ross Sea, Charcot Island and Peter I Island. The vessel is on schedule for a planned launch in 2020 before its delivery in 2021.
