W Debuts Panama City Hotel
Studio Gaia’s design incorporates industrial shipping containers as a local tie-in
W Hotels Worldwide, part of Marriott Intl., has debuted W Panama, the brand’s first property in Central America. Located in the business district of Panama City, the new hotel is housed within the 50-floor Evolution Tower on Calle 50. Studio Gaia designed the 203-key hotel in collaboration with W Hotels’ internal team.
W Panama’s design reconstructs the city's past and present with distinct hues and textural contrasts inspired by the international importance of the Panama Canal. The hotel transforms the industrial look of shipping containers, similar to those often found along the canal, with original graffiti painted by the esteemed Diablos Rojos-inspired artist, Oscar Melgar. Shipping containers can be found in the hotel's Living Room, the brand's take on the traditional hotel lobby; the 6,835-sq.-ft. WET Deck pool area; and the Cargo cocktail bar.
The hotel’s guest rooms feature murals and handmade Mola fabrics and patterns from the Guna and Emberá indigenous communities. Rooms also include floor-to-ceiling mirrors and modular lounge seating.
"Panama City is one of the most vibrant and dynamic cities in Central America, a fusion of new and old, east and west, business and hedonism,” says Anthony Ingham, global brand leader, W Hotels Worldwide. "W Panama embodies the spirit of Panama, showing off the style and energy of this diverse global hub with an intricate design that pays homage to both the history of the region and its bright future."
