Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour has opened, the first newbuild, international luxury hotel to open in the Australian city’s central business district since the 2000 Summer Olympics. The $500 million AccorHotels project was designed by local architect Richard Francis-Jones, of Francis-Jones Morehen Thorp architects, in conjunction with Dreamtime Australia Design and the A+ Design Group.

The 35-story hotel features a glass exterior with triangular accents representing sails, as well as a red ochre and blue color palette that pays tribute to the indigenous clans of the Eora nation who once inhabited the area.

The hotel's public spaces and guest rooms pay tribute to its maritime location and the industries that formerly occupied the site, including extensive use of timber representing Sydney's wharf heritage, as well as rope and sandstone motifs in the carpets. The hotel offers 590 guest rooms, including 35 suites. All those accommodations feature the Sofitel MyBed and floor-to-ceiling windows, and its Bellerive Suite features a separate living room, dining room and butler's pantry.

The hotel’s F&B offerings include the Atelier by Sofitel signature restaurant on the third floor and three bars: The Champagne Bar, Espirit Noir lobby bar and Le Rivage Pool Bar.

"Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour is the first new-build 5-star hotel the city has seen in more than 15 years and it is going to be a flagship property, not only for AccorHotels but for the Australian hotel industry," says Simon McGrath, chief operating officer of AccorHotels Pacific.

Sofitel’s recent openings include Sofitel Baltimore in Paris, Sofitel Foshan, Sofitel Kuala Lumpur Damansara, Sofitel Guiyang Hunter and Sofitel Singapore City Center, with Sofitel Surabaya Majapahit slated to debut soon.
