Collage Architects, Yellow Dog Studios design Uptown newbuild’s interiors

Marriott Intl.’s millennial-focused Moxy Hotels brand has made its debut in Minneapolis. Two local architecture and design firms, Collage Architects and Yellow Dog Studios, teamed to create the six-story newbuild property’s public and private spaces, including its industrial-chic communal lobby and the Vinyl Listening Lounge and Record Room, which features hundreds of records and three hi-fi turntables as a nod to the city’s music-centric heritage.

Located on the corner of Lake Street and Emerson Avenue in the city’s Uptown neighborhood, project participants say the 125-key hotel was designed to help guests connect with relevant and authentic local experiences. The lobby features a mix of modern and vintage-inspired furniture and light fixtures, as well as a check-in bar instead of a traditional front desk. Artwork from nonprofit neighborhood gallery Soo Visual Arts Center is displayed throughout the public areas. During summer months, a lobby garage door is opened, providing access to the community’s bike paths and block parties.

Tech-enabled bedrooms play up efficiency, with a peg wall for hanging clothes in lieu of a closet. A personal amp and Fender guitar is mounted in every guest room, continuing the Twin Cities music theme.

A sixth-floor, two-bedroom suite features soaring ceilings, a glass-bottom balcony and a round Japanese soaking tub, as well as an attached green room that can accommodate up to 40 guests. That space is decked out with music photos by First Avenue music club photographer Daniel Corrigan, modular sofas, a private bar and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Uptown Minneapolis and the downtown skyline.

“Designed for both the young and the young at heart, Moxy doesn't take life too seriously, and is a perfect spot for both visitors to the city and locals to hang out, meet new friends and have some fun,” says Vicki Poulos, senior global brand director, Moxy Hotels.

Owned by locally based Graves Hospitality, Moxy Minneapolis Uptown is the brand’s 22nd hotel to open globally and its fifth in the U.S. This year, the flag plans to launch a hotel in Minneapolis’ downtown, as well as properties in Chicago, Seattle, Washington D.C., Memphis, Atlanta and Munich.
