Dubai Debuts W
Design draws inspo from locale
Marriott Intl.'s W Dubai – The Palm, part of the brand's W Escapes, features the brand’s signature “W” sign patterned to resemble an evaporated desert river bed. Orsoni glass tiles in colors inspired by overgrown foliage beckon guests into the property’s entrance. A five-story atrium envelopes the Welcome Desk, paying homage to desert fortresses and citadels of long ago. Golden trusses made of framed boxes are seen throughout the space. These are reminiscent of different stages of modern construction in Dubai, a common sight of the changing cityscape, and sit upon carpets that depict the island’s surrounding waters. “The Soundwave,” a 6.5-ton visual vector represents a W sound wave and is comprised of 640 glass pieces. Alternating colors reflect the music from the neighboring W Lounge.
The hotel’s 350 guestrooms showcase curved walls with tiles that represent the colors of the sea. Contemporary graffiti acts as wall décor, featuring lyrics in Arabic from an iconic song by Lebanese singer Fairouz.
The property is also home to multiple pools that sit in a wave-like pattern, a spa, fitness center and several food and beverage outlets. The hotel’s Torno Sobito is the first restaurant outside of Italy by Chef Massimo Bottura, mastermind behind Osteria Francescana. Chef Akira Back, meanwhile, heads up Japanese-Korean fusion eatery Akira Back. SoBe (short for South Beach) is an outlet inspired by Miami, while LIV offers lighter fare.
