Gilded Iguana Reopens in Nosara
Benjamin Garcia Saxe redesigns Costa Rican surf hotel
The Gilded Iguana Surf Hotel in Nosara, Costa Rica, has reopened following a renovation and expansion. San Jose, Costa Rica-based architect Benjamin Garcia Saxe spearheaded the 40-year-old hotel’s transformation.
The Gilded Iguana now includes 29 redesigned guest rooms, including a Surfer Suite. All rooms offer surfboard storage, indoor/outdoor living space with balconies, and indoor and outdoor showers. The renovation also included the construction of a new pool and kids’ pool, as well as a pool bar by Central American designer Joan Roca.
"The Gilded Iguana has been many things to many people," says Jeffrey Grosshandler, the hotel’s co-owner and project manager. "It has been a surf hangout, a night spot, a community meeting place and everything in between. All of these things have been considered in the redesign process. This includes the careful rebuilding of The Gilded Iguana's restaurant and bar, as it is the heart and soul of not only the property but also the larger community of Nosara."
