Boutique Design Events and Trade Fairs

Marriott Intl.’s Moxy brand is set to debut its latest experiential property in Manhattan’s Flower District this fall. With architecture by Stonehill Taylor, the 37-story, 349-key Moxy Chelsea will feature interiors by Yabu Pushelberg and Rockwell Group. Restaurant and nightlife company TAO Group also plans to debut new F&B concepts in partnership with Francesco and Lorenzo Panella of Antica Pesa (Rome and Brooklyn) at the hotel, which is being developed by Lightstone.

A glass-enclosed atrium with a three-story living wall and greenhouse-style windows will span the building’s industrial front façade. Created by Yabu Pushelberg, a flower shop showcasing four butcher blocks suspended from the 12-ft. ceiling will serve as the hotel’s entry. Those blocks will double as check-in kiosks as an alternative to the traditional reception desk. On the ceiling, a digital LED art installation will flash cheeky phrases such as “Good Morning, Stranger” and “You Love Me, You Love Me More,” while a sculptural wood-cast concrete staircase lead from the check-in area to the lobby lounge. Yabu Pushelberg’s guestroom design concept showcases a muted color palette with warm, wood-look floors, camouflage-green mosaic tile, striped drapes and wax-dipped canvas headboards. Each room will have custom multipurpose, foldaway furniture, which will hang on an open pegboard wall, as well as 10-ft. ceilings and full height, wall-to-wall windows,. Bathroom plans include walk-in rain showers with playful phrases such as “Some Regrets” and “Wild Thing” printed on the tiles. Room types will include quad bunk rooms as well as a suite with two adjoining king rooms, aptly named the MONDO Suite.

Designed by Rockwell Group, the ground-floor café, ristorante and second-floor lobby will serve as coworking spaces during the day and lounges at night. In addition to two meeting studios and the coworking lounge, Rockwell Group is designing an outdoor garden terrace with a vintage Italian aesthetic, including a Neapolitan-style pizza oven and a made-for-Moxy bocce drinking game. Topping off the hotel on the 35th floor will be a glass-enclosed rooftop lounge. A retractable window wall will transform that space into an alfresco sky veranda.
 
TAO Group’s dining plans include a ristorante, a caffè and a pasticceria, as well as a cocktail bar and lounge offering a gourmet take on Italian street food.

The project marks the second collaboration by Yabu Pushelberg and Rockwell Group following Moxy Times Square, the brand’s first hotel in the city (and part of the Boutique Design New York [BDNY] design tour in 2017). Lightstone plans to develop four more Moxy properties in such locations as New York’s East Village, Miami and Los Angeles.
