Douglas Kallfelz of Union Studio Architecture & Community Design is on deck to design the upcoming $29 million Hammetts Wharf on Newport, Rhode Island’s waterfront.
The development, which is supported by $3.5 million in tax increment financing from the Rhode Island Commerce Corporation, will include an 84-room boutique hotel, a 4,000 sq. ft. waterfront restaurant and 3,000 sq. ft. of retail space. Main Street Hospitality has been contracted to operate the hotel.
Set to open in 2020, the development is designed to enhance the historic waterfront and will be located next to the Newport Yachting Center, the Mooring restaurant, the Smokehouse restaurant, and the Bohlin event venue. The hotel’s design will pay homage to the city’s mercantile wharfs. Hammetts Wharf will also provide new public access to the waterfront.
