Construction is underway at The Farmstead, a new safari lodge at The Royal Portfolio’s Royal Malewane. The new lodge follows a refurbishment of the existing property.
Liz Biden, owner of The Royal Portfolio, designs and decorates all the interiors of the properties in her collection. The Farmstead will be no different, filled with eclectic furniture and original art curated by Biden.
“Expect light oak, tin rooves, wrought iron and gentle hues of blue and white with royal blue, indigo and turquoise patterns adorning the fabrics of comfy sofas on wide verandas,” she says.
The Farmstead, set to open next year, will include three Luxury Farm Suites. The Farmhouse, a four-bedroom villa with a private chef, butler, housekeeper, safari vehicle, ranger and tracker, rounds out the accommodations. The main lodge area will offer a double spa treatment room, a gym, a fire pit and a deck where guests can relax and eat meals while watching the wildlife that visit an adjacent waterhole.
Royal Malewane agreed to a long lease of the land from the local Moletele community, paying a monthly rental to the community as well as a share of revenue as additional income. At the end of the long lease all buildings and the land will revert to the community with the option to work with The Royal Portfolio indefinitely. Throughout the lease, The Royal Portfolio will employ members of the community and also involve the community in conservation efforts to preserve the region’s wildlife.
