Design Hotels welcomed its first member property in the Tanzanian archipelago, the 55-villa luxury Zuri Zanzibar.
The resort derives its name from the Swahili word for “beautiful.” Designers with London- and Prague-based architectural and interior design firm Jestico & Whiles used that as a stepping off point to create a concept the blends contemporary elegance with signature elements of African aesthetics.
For example, the thatched bungalows, which range in size from 710 to 2,690 sq. ft., are clustered to reflect the way homes are sited in neighboring villages. The design concept is unified with natural wood and wicker accents as well as a neutral color palette. Each villa showcases its own terrace and outdoor shower. Custom artwork crafted by locals—including wall murals, carved doors with spice motifs, beaded curtains and lotus décor—adorns the bungalows.
The resort also offers an infinity pool, a library and movie collection, pool table, water sports, and wellness center with an outdoor gym and yoga studio. Guests can also enjoy the property’s spice garden and cooking classes with the hotel’s chefs at the on-property Spice House.
