Canopy, Hilton’s lifestyle flag, plans to make its London debut in 2020. The 342-key hotel property, in the city’s Aldgate district, is being designed by ACME, a multidisciplinary firm with studios in London, Berlin and Melbourne.
The hotel will involve the renovation of an existing building, along with some new construction. Project participants say its guest rooms are meant to evoke the area’s history through materials and patterns, while staying true to the late modernist origins of the existing building’s concrete frame, which will remain exposed where possible.
“We enjoyed the opportunity to define the look and feel of the UK’s first Canopy by Hilton hotel,” says Friedrich Ludewig, director, ACME. “The original 1977 building with its complex facade and waffle slab has been a great stage to work within. Each of the new fixtures and fittings for the guest room have been developed using local discreet Aldgate and Whitechapel references, creating a guest experience rooted in the history of context of East London.”
ACME is designing bespoke furniture and fabrics for this hotel, such as the feature canopy over the bed, the chaise lounge, cushions, chairs, the lights and the side table. Carpets and wall fabrics are inspired by the woven legacy of the Huguenots, using an abstracted oral pattern of Anna Maria Garthwaite, while the rugs are influenced by the ikat dyeing technique and include a neutral abstract pattern.
ACME is also working with Dais Contemporary to commission a series of artworks for the new Canopy. Created by London-based artists such as Tom Gidley, Janne Malmros and Steven Quinn, the works reference areas of the East London such as Whitechapel, Spitalfields and Shoreditch. Installations will also include large-scale portraits for the hotel’s corridors by artist Mia Bergeron, showcasing the faces of everyday characters living and working in the surrounding neighborhoods.
Al-karim Nathoo, managing director of project developer 4C Hotel Group, added: “With a number of our hotels across East Africa and Canada operating under various Hilton brands, we are excited about the addition of the Canopy brand to our UK portfolio and the strengthening of our ongoing partnership with Hilton. As the hotel industry continues to evolve we believe this lifestyle hotel will be a game-changing development in London.”
