Two Roads’ Alila Hotels Heads to the U.S.

Two Roads Hospitality will bring its Singapore-based Alila Hotels & Resorts brand to North America this fall, when it opens a renovated resort in California’s Big Sur. San Francisco-based interiors firm BraytonHughes Design Studios is teaming with architecture firm Ray Parks & Associates of Carmel, California, to transform the former Ventana Inn, which is closed for renovations.

“Since the Post family settled in Big Sur at the end of the 19th century, the area has represented the confluence of ocean, forest, mindfulness and artistry unparalleled anywhere else in the world,” says John Pritzker, co-chairman of Two Roads Hospitality and founding partner and director of Geolo Capital. “I couldn’t be more excited for the opening of Ventana Big Sur to once again bring travelers back to this special part of the world,” adds Pritzker, who appeared on the cover of Boutique Design’s November 2015 edition with Commune Hotels + Resorts’ then-ceo Niki Leondakis. In the Q+A accompanying that cover, Leondakis said Commune—which has since been rebranded as Two Roads—planned to bring the Alila concept to the U.S.)

In addition to 59 refreshed guest rooms, suites and villas, plans for Ventana Big Sur include a full-service Spa Alila, two updated outdoor pools with a new infinity-edge hot tub and outdoor Japanese hot baths, and a new concept and expanded ocean-view patio for The Sur House restaurant.

Other additions will include a Social House with three lifestyle spaces designed for relaxing and connecting; a 7,000-sq.-ft. Ocean Meadow Lawn for private events; a Glass House Gallery; and a luxury camping experience—Redwood Canyon Glampsites—in the resort’s 20-acre, redwood-canopied forest.
