Mondrian Park Avenue Sets Fall Debut
Former SLS site to be managed by Journal Hotels
sbe announced that the Mondrian Park Avenue hotel in New York will open this fall. Originally planned as an SLS property designed by Philippe Starck with a culinary concept by José Andrés, the project evolved after sbe's acquisition of Morgans Hotel Group last year, which resulted in a renewed focus on bringing the Mondrian brand to new markets around the world. In the aftermath of that shift, the design and execution of Mondrian Park Avenue was completed by sbe's design and development team.
The project, a collaboration between building owner Moin Development and sbe, will be managed by the recently formed Journal Hotels, which is helmed by veteran hotelier Stephen Brandman.
"The Mondrian brand aligns perfectly with the NoMad neighborhood, and is an extremely valuable brand for sbe,” says Sam Nazarian, founder and ceo of sbe, a Los Angeles-based lifestyle hospitality company. “Its international allure is why we chose to give it priority in New York, and I'm excited that this property will be sbe's first collaboration with New York's real estate powerhouse family, David Moinian and Moin Development. We're also proud to team up with celebrated hotelier Stephen Brandman and Journal Hotels to bring the spirit of the brand to life in New York."
Adds David Moinian: "We will be launching a truly exciting hotel with exquisite design and terrific views of the classic New York City skyline. We look forward to being the new jewel on Park Avenue."
Originally a 15-story office building built in 1918, five floors were added to the structure at 444 Park Avenue South during its conversion to a hotel. The new Mondrian will have 189 guest rooms and suites, and 7,000 sq. ft. of meeting and event space, including a private rooftop meeting room.
In addition, the property will feature a 120-seat Cleo, sbe's culinary concept led by chef Danny Elmaleh. With locations in Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Miami, this will be the first Cleo in New York and fifth for the brand overall. Cleo draws from a variety of influences and showcases a modern twist on the ingredients and cultures of the eastern and southern Mediterranean.
Mondrian Park Avenue will join that flag’s growing portfolio, which currently consists of locales in in Los Angeles, London and South Beach. Mondrian plans to open its first locale in the Middle East in October, with the opening of Mondrian Doha in Qatar, a 270-key luxury destination designed by famed Dutch designer Marcel Wanders. Additionally, the brand has plans to open in Dubai in 2019.
