Report: Flag Change at W. Hollywood Hotel
The James is out, Sternlicht’s 1 Hotels is in
Barry Sternlicht’s Starwood Capital is buying The James hotel that was slated to open on West Hollywood’s Sunset Strip in May, according to several published reports. Following the move, the hotel will fly Starwood’s eco-luxury 1 Hotels flag. An updated opening date for the previously announced hotel has not yet been disclosed.
“While all of us at The James Hotels continue to maintain our commitment to community, consciousness and connection, we will not be introducing The James Hotels to Los Angeles at this time,” the brand, which is part of Denihan Hospitality, posted on the hotel’s website. “As often happens in the real estate business, the property owner has decided to sell the property and as a result, a different operator will run the hotel.”
Starwood is in escrow to acquire the hotel from Los Angeles-based developer CIM Group, West Hollywood city manager Paul Arevalo told Travel Weekly, adding that the deal was slated to close by early July and that the changeover wouldn’t cause “a significant delay” in the opening.
If all goes according to plan, the West Hollywood locale will be the second 1 Hotel in California. In February, the brand unveiled plans to open a representative of the brand in Silicon Valley in late 2019, as well as hotels in Sanya, China’s Haitang Bay and Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. The luxury lifestyle flag’s current portfolio consists of two New York hotels—in Brooklyn and on Central Park—and one in Miami’s South Beach.
