Historic building to house 250-key hotel
Donald Trump may not be headed for the White House, but his hotel company has scored a major coup in Washington, D.C.: It has been selected to redevelop the capital’s Old Post Office Building into a luxury hotel. Trump, who has publicly contemplated running for president on more than one occasion, called the Trump Hotel Collection’s selection by the U.S. General Services Administration “a tremendous validation of our plan for the highest and best use of this historic building.”
Trump teamed with co-investor Colony Capital on its redevelopment proposal for the project. Plans for the Trump International Hotel, The Old Post Office, include more than 250 guest rooms, penthouses and presidential suites; high-end restaurants, a café, bar and lounge; extensive banquet, ballroom and meeting facilities; and a spa. Trump’s plans also include a library, a curated museum, exhibition gallery and indoor and outdoor gardens. The developer also says it will “preserve and enhance” the building’s historic features.
In its news release about the project, the GSA said it will spend the next year negotiating a detailed agreement for the building’s redevelopment with Trump’s company, specifying building usage, historic-preservation requirements and details of the federal government’s revenue stream from the project. If negotiations proceed as anticipated, the GSA says, redevelopment of the Old Post Office is expected to start in 2014 ,with occupancy in 2016.
The Old Post Office is a Richardsonian Romanesque Revival building that was completed in 1899 on Pennsylvania Avenue at 12th Street. In 2008, recognizing that the building had outlived its usefulness as federal office space, Congress directed the GSA to enter into a long-term lease for its private-sector development and restoration.
Trump beat out several other high-profile developers and hotel companies seeking to redevelop the Old Post Office, including Hilton Worldwide, which proposed converting it into a Waldorf Astoria Hotel.
