Boutique Design’s latest roster of up-and-coming designers is wise beyond its years.

“Youth is wasted on the wrong people”—so said the grumpy neighbor in the classic movie, “It’s a Wonderful Life.” While that sentiment may still be widely held today, it’s definitely not the case with this year’s Boutique 18. Having weathered the downturn of the past several years, our annual cadre of up-and-coming designers is taking what it learned from that experience and moving ahead with a “work smarter” ethic that’s likely to last throughout their careers.
We will release the full list of Boutique 18 winners shortly. We will also profile them in the May+June 2011 edition of Boutique Design, and celebrate their achievement at the Boutique 18 Bash in May in Las Vegas. In the meantime, to whet your appetite for that coverage and event, I wanted to share a few nuggets of wisdom the 18 offered up in response to our request that they identify the biggest challenge facing their field over the next five years.
Leslie Clark, EoA: The days of abundant projects with cushy budgets seem to be over (or at least few and far between). The opportunity, rather than challenge, is for designers to dig deep down and find economical solutions without sacrificing big concepts.
Andrea Gillespie, AK Designs: Clients expect a timeless, yet durable design that can withstand typical wear and tear. In return, designers must be knowledgeable about product, utilize proper time management and draw on these opportunities as a catalyst for creative thinking.
Amelie Hicks, Richard McCormack Design: While some challenges in the future may be foreseen, others, at this point, can't be imagined. That means we need to remain adaptable and versatile, in order to be ready for anything.
Jessica Hughley, Therese Virserius Design: With such software programs as AutoCad and Revit, designers now have the ease of never putting hand-to-pen and pen-to-paper to communicate design details. This lost art is one that I think continues to disconnect designers from the personal, tactile part of our craft. In the ongoing education of upcoming designers, I think we should still encourage this skill-set of still putting pen to paper, from the inception of a thought through the construction detailing.
