The latest chapter in Ian Schrager’s storied career opens its doors for business on Sept. 12. That’s the “soft” opening date for the boutique hotel pioneer’s latest concept, the PUBLIC Chicago hotel. (The formal grand opening is a month later, at which time Schrager will also take the wraps off the new look for the hotel’s fabled Pump Room restaurant.)
The 285-key PUBLIC locale, in the storied Ambassador East Hotel, will feature what Schrager describes as “a restrained, refined and classically cool approach … It’s a new simplicity, a new chic and a sincere chic.” In keeping with those goals, Schrager says the renovation of 85-year-old hotel has involved maintaining its existing structure and architectural details and infusing it with “no-color colors and a smart mix of modern pieces in unexpected combinations.”
Design twists within the hotel include desks in guest rooms that face either the window or the interior of the room, rather than the walls, and the creation of “chat rooms” in the public spaces that combine intimate seating areas and communal work stations. The overall idea, according to PUBLIC’s web site, is to create a locale that “takes the best from the boutique/lifestyle set and the best from the limited-service model to create a new kind of hotel.”
Will that concept connect with guests? Only time will tell. But you might not want to bet against Schrager’s instincts. After all, the recent brouhaha over the first Edition hotel that he helped Marriott create notwithstanding, he’s the guy behind such groundbreaking and successful projects as the Morgans Hotel in New York, the Delano Hotel in Miami and Mondrian Hotel in West Hollywood, to name just a few.
