AvroKO, ARTIGAS design brand’s first property

RCD Hotels has launched UNICO Hotels, an adults-only, all-inclusive brand designed to reflect each property's locale and native culture. In keeping with that motif, each of the new flag’s properties will bear the name of its latitude and longitude, starting with its first locale, 20° 87°, which is slated to open in early 2017 in the Riviera Maya on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula.

The hotel will feature in-room galleries with art available to purchase from local artisans, as well as an “Experience Room,” with a selection of beach gear and personalized in-room amenities sourced from local craftsman. An on-site distillery or brewery that incorporates regional ingredients, as well as an annual rotating chef restaurant concept with a focus on emerging talent, will also be on tap.

With exteriors designed by Mexican firm ARTIGAS Arquitectos and interiors by New York-based AvroKO, the brand’s first property will feature 448 guest rooms with plunge pools or double-hydro spa tubs. Also in the plans are three pools, four restaurants, and five bars and lounges, including a cigar lounge and two swim-up bars.

The locale’s wellness center will feature specialty classes, a visiting instructor program and personal training sessions, in addition to a spa with 18 cabanas, hydrotherapy facilities with a plunge pool and Hammam, and a steam and sauna room. Event space will include an 11,600-sq.-ft. ballroom, two breakout rooms and outdoor space.

Unlike many new hospitality brands that play up each location’s heritage, UNICO Hotels says it will instead highlight contemporary culture and “connect guests to the real version of each destination, as it is today.” That concept includes providing guests a “host” for their stay, in lieu of traditional butler service, and offering extensive programming with an emphasis on cultural exploration.

The new brand is part of Miami-based AIC Hotel Group (formerly the All Inclusive Collection), which is contracted by RCD Hotels to spearhead the sales and marketing efforts for the all-inclusive Hard Rock Hotels in Mexico and the Caribbean, as well as the recently added Eden Roc Miami Beach and Nobu Hotel Miami Beach. In addition to UNICO Hotel Riviera Maya, AIC’s upcoming projects include the Nobu Hotel Los Cabos.
