Judge orders owner to return keys
Marriott will regain control of the Waikiki Edition today after the hotel’s owners took over management of the property in an overnight raid last Sunday. According to a release issued by Marriott, a New York state judge ordered owner M Waikiki LLC to return the hotel to Marriott’s control by 8:30 p.m. eastern time today, or 2:30 p.m. Honolulu time.
M Waikiki LLC took action despite of a contract that allows Marriott to run the hotel as an Edition for 30 years. The company also claimed in a lawsuit filed in May in New York Supreme Court that Marriott had failed to make the Edition hotel brand a success, resulting in the Waikiki location underperforming relative to its market.
“The past few days have been trying, frustrating and confusing for our guests and employees. We are in the process of resuming operations, quickly returning the hotel and its service to Edition standards,” says Marriott’s chief operating officer Arne Sorenson.
