As Boutique Design’s product editor, walking into this year’s BDNY was a visual treat. For weeks, jpeg images and PDFs of exhibitor products had been filling my inbox, but nothing beats experiencing such goods in person. At the show, I was able to see and feel the quality material and intricate craftsmanship that makes each piece special. Here are some of the visual treats that stand out in my mind from this year’s show.

An open platform overlooking the show floor, which was designed by New York-based Krause + Sawyer, showcased modular seating by B&B Italia; intimate booths by Extremis; and colorful chairs by D'Apostrophe. To complete the scene, Sound Investment installed digital displays around the BDNY café, which featured drapery by Fabric Innovation; and an impressive bank of video screens by Atmosphere played serene images of tropical scenes and a similarly mellow soundtrack.

That palpable buzz flowed over onto the floor, as well. Designer Todd Tyler debuted The New York collection for Blue Leaf Hospitality. The furnishings line features deep hues, smooth lines and bold textures inspired by the city.

Pops of color showed up in many products throughout the show. Groundplans Ltd.’s lava-like liquid gel tiles brought bright color to flooring and Montreal-based Lillum introduced its multi-colored paraffin lanterns to the U.S. market. On a similar note, Andarina Designs’ displayed neon light fixtures inspired by vintage glass swizzle sticks.

Other notable hospitality products included furniture company Lily Jack’s petrified wood top side table, and Studio El’s booth illustrated the company’s custom capabilities with clear acrylic, bamboo and aluminum substrate options for hotel art.

If you didn’t get a chance to experience the latest products at BDNY, don’t fret. You can still get in on the excitement by watching the video review  and checking out this year’s Boutique Design Award winners. And for more new products, watch for the January+February issue, where BD will explore what’s hot (and what’s not) for 2012.
