Snøhetta designs new-build on Cornell Tech campus

AJ Capital Partners and Cornell University have unveiled plans for a Graduate hotel on the university’s new namesake Tech campus on Roosevelt Island, New York. International multidisciplinary firm Snøhetta has been tapped to design the 196-key, new-build boutique, which is slated to open in 2019. The first phase of the Cornell Tech campus is scheduled to open in September.

Located on the narrow island in New York’s East River, the hotel will sport a slender profile and offer unobstructed views of the Manhattan skyline via floor-to-ceiling windows. Project participants say the property will feature a residential aesthetic that references the island’s history and draws on the spirit of innovation inspired by the new campus. Plans include a full-service restaurant, a rooftop bar and 5,200 sq. ft. of meeting and event facilities.

“Graduate Roosevelt Island is the type of transformative project that has come to epitomize our company,” says Ben Weprin, founder and ceo of Chicago-based AJ Capital Partners, which launched Graduate Hotels in 2014. “The hotel will sit prominently at the gateway to Cornell Tech, the most innovative academic campus in the world, and will offer guests, campus visitors and Roosevelt Island citizens a truly distinctive and unique experience. We couldn't be more excited to partner with Cornell University and to introduce Graduate Hotels to New York City.”

The flag’s current locales include Ann Arbor, Michigan; Athens, Georgia; Charlottesville, Virginia; Madison, Wisconsin; Oxford, Mississippi; and Tempe, Arizona. The brand also plans to open properties in Berkeley, California; Lincoln, Nebraska; Minneapolis, Minnesota; and Richmond, Virginia, this year, as well as hotels in Bloomington, Indiana, and Seattle, Washington, in 2018.

The master plan for the Cornell Tech campus was created by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill in collaboration with landscape architecture firm James Corner Field Operations. Project participants say it will be one of the most environmentally friendly and energy-efficient campuses in the world.
