Will convert historic theater building
Ace Hotel will convert the United Artists building in downtown Los Angeles into a boutique hotel, the Los Angeles Times reports. The 180-key locale will open in the 13-floor theater and office complex in the summer of 2013.
"The United Artists building has an intriguing history and is an outstanding example of 1920s gothic architecture," Alex Calderwood, co-founder of Portland, Ore.-based Ace Hotel, told the Times. "We look forward to being a part of the ongoing effort to revitalize South Broadway."
Originally constructed in 1927, the theater was built for a movie production company founded by film luminaries including Charlie Chaplin and D.W. Griffith. Hotel investor Greenfield Partners bought the building from Wescott Christian Center Inc. for $11 million in October.
The hotel’s amenities will include a restaurant, bar and pool. Greenfield and Ace have yet to determine how the building’s 1,600-seat theater will be used. Ace currently operates boutique hotels in renovated buildings in Portland, Seattle, New York and Palm Springs, Calif.
