Spotlight: Leigh Anne van Dusen
A Q&A with O Ecotextiles' Founder
L
eigh Anne Van Dusen is the co-founder and general manager of O Ecotextiles, a company that began five years ago when van Dusen’s children suggested she “go green” when redoing her sofa. She says she started looking for sumptuous, sustainable fabrics and ended up doing research that led to the formation of O Ecotextiles. Van Dusen and her sister Patty now run the business under the motto “opulent yet organic” and “sensuous yet sustainable.”
What were your hobbies growing up? I was always doing something with my hands — needlepoint, painting, cooking, gardening. I even went through a decoupage phase. I still love crafts from any part of the world and particularly like to see the evidence of the craftsman’s hand in their work.
What was your first job? My first job after graduation from college was as an assistant for the photo editor at Smithsonian Magazine. It was a fabulous job — there were still lots of visits from old LIFE magazine photographers who were friends with Smithsonian’s legendary editors — Edward K. Thompson, Robert Capa, “Eisie” (Alfred Eisenstaedt) and Gordon Parks among them.
What was the first thing you designed? Halloween costumes for my little brother and sister.
What was the latest thing that you’ve designed? The fabric collection we’re showing is always evolving. It is a delicate balance between safety, performance and aesthetics.
What do you have on the walls at home? Wherever we don’t have bookshelves, I like to put stuff on the walls: my kids’ artwork, photos done by my friends, some pieces by local artists like Joe Max Emminger and Susan Bennerstrom, and textiles. My favorites include an antique poncho from Ecuador and a Caucasian saddlebag.
Who are your idols? People who see a problem and give their energy to make a difference — like Dr. Paul Farmer, Desmond Tutu and Harriet Tubman.
What would you like to do that is unrelated to your current profession? Be an actor – stage, not screen.
Where do you look for inspiration? Everywhere.
What is your favorite possession? My fully seasoned Lodge cast iron frying pan.
What’s your mantra? We can do better.
What keeps you motivated? Living each day!
